MISC:The Maldives, also known as Divehi Raajje, consist of 1,200 coral
islands grouped into 19 atolls, with about 220 islands being inhabited.
The terrain is extremely flat, no elevation reaches above 2.5 meters.
An island can be rented in the Maldives for 14 cents per coconut palm
per year (almost anyone can do this by subletting from a National). The
word "atoll" comes from their language. The islands have the world's
highest divorce rate, half of the women over 30 have been married 4 or
more times. 80% of the work force is engaged in fishing. The Maldives
became independent 26 July, 1965. Member of UN since 1965. Member of
Commonwealth of Nations.
